The following cross-cutting themes and approaches are present in all our work
Conceptual and methodological frameworks
- Feminist approach to diversity with equity: We believe all forms of oppression and violence are unjust and interrelated. They are social, not individual, problems. Respect for diversity must be accompanied by equitable practices in order to achieve equality.
- The personal is political and the political is personal: The expressions of unequal power relations permeate and impact every aspect of daily life, including our own thoughts, attitudes and behaviors.
- A psychosocial methodological approach assures effective work at the community level, in organizations, institutions, movements, and in broadcast media and social media platforms.
- The local and the global are interconnected: Changes at the global level impact our communities and our lives. Likewise, local work has the power to influence change at the national, regional and even global levels. Recognizing this dynamic relationship is critical to creating positive impact at different levels.
Individual and collective action
- The right to exercise our rights: We consider the right to organize and fight for rights as a right in itself which must be defended.
- A sense of belonging to a broader community of practice and to social movements is an important element to stimulate people’s engagement in individual and collective action.
- A sense of purpose that binds us together encourages us to work individually and collectively for the common good.
- Building bridges across differences and among different sectors, cultures and identities is the only way to build alliances, coalitions and movements to carry out successful change strategies.
Support for activists and leaders
- Individual and collective empowerment is key to being able to think, act and live in line with one’s own principles and values.
- Non-violence, and mental and physical health: Body and mind are the starting points for individual and collective action.
- Social support, self-care, and individual and collective security and protection of activists and leaders are the basis for the sustainability of collective action.
Favorable conditions for change
- Strengthening the social fabric at the community level is fundamental for fostering and supporting activism, collective action, individual and collective transformations, and cultural change.
- Communication for social change: Language, formats, representation and dissemination and distribution methods are relevant in influencing social norms, environment and public opinion.
- An inclusive and democratic political culture in organizations and movements requires recognition of internal power dynamics and the development of organizational structures and processes that foster interpersonal relations of mutual respect and solidarity.
