Cross-cutting themes and approaches

Conceptual and Methodological Approaches

  • A feminist approach to diversity and equity. All forms of oppression and violence are interconnected and unjust. They are social problems, not individual ones. Respect for diversity must be accompanied by practices that promote equity.
  • The personal is political, and the political is personal: Manifestations of unequal power relations affect and permeate the various spheres and levels of everyday life, including our own thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors.
  • Methodologies and content with a psychosocial focus for working at the community level, within organizations and institutions, in social movements, and through social media and communication platforms.
  • The local and the global are interconnected. Global changes impact our communities and our lives. Similarly, the local level has the power to influence changes at the national, regional, and even global levels. Recognizing this relationship is essential to creating a positive impact at different scales.

Individual and Collective Action

  • The Right to Rights: We view the right to organize and fight for our rights as a right in and of itself, and one that must be defended. A sense of belonging to a community of practice and a broad-based movement is an important element for both individual and collective action.
  • A sense of purpose that unites us and inspires us to work individually and collectively for the common good.
  • We must build bridges to forge alliances, partnerships, and strategies for joint action and intersectoral coordination.

Support for Activists and Leaders

  • Individual and collective empowerment is key to being able to think, live, and act in accordance with one’s own principles and values.
  • Nonviolence, mental and physical health: The body and mind are vital starting points for individual and collective action.
  • Social support, self-care, and the individual and collective protection and safety of activists and leaders are the foundation of sustainable collective action.

Environments Conducive to Change

  • Strengthening the social fabric at the community level is a fundamental foundation for activism, collective action, and individual and collective transformation, as well as cultural change, etc.
  • Communication for Social Change: Language, formats, spokespersons, and methods of dissemination influence social norms, the environment, and public opinion
  • An inclusive and democratic political culture within organizations and movements requires recognition of internal power dynamics and the development of organizational structures and processes that foster interpersonal relationships based on mutual respect and solidarity.
